CANYON, Texas (Nov. 7) -- There will be no NCAA Division II national tournament appearance for Central Oklahoma in 2008.
The Bronchos needed to win the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship to earn their fourth straight national playoff berth and that bid ended here Friday afternoon with a 5-1 semifinal loss to host West Texas A&M.

UCO trailed just 2-1 at halftime, but the Lady Buffs took control early in the second half and went on to beat the Bronchos for the second time this season.  WTAMU advance to Sunday’s tournament finals against Texas A&M-Commerce, which ousted Midwestern State 3-0 in the other semifinal.

"We played pretty well the first half and were in the game, but that goal they got early in the second half took the wind out of our sails," said UCO coach Mike Cook, whose team finished 13-6-3.  "We had a young team and just didn’t play with the consistency we needed to this season, but we’ve got a lot of good players coming back next year."

The Bronchos had the same number of shots (15) as WTAMU, but the Lady Buffs converted five of their nine shots on goal while UCO made just one of their seven.

WTAMU scored early to take a 1-0 lead, getting a penalty kick goal from Adi Stein just 4:05 into the contest.  The Bronchos came back to tie it in the 21st minute when Katelyn Cropp booted in a shot from right in front of the net off a deflection.

The Lady Buffs took the lead for good at the 28:44 mark en route to taking a 2-1 lead into intermission and WTAMU made it 3-1 just three minutes into the second half.  Goals in the 68th and 83rd minute rounded out the scoring.

UCO losses just two seniors off this year’s team -- forward Stephanie Lovely and midfielder Jenny Racicot.

RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 8) -- A pair of Central Oklahoma freshmen claimed two of the Lone Star Conference’s three weekly women’s soccer awards Wednesday, with McKenzie Caldwell claiming Defensive Player of the Week and Samantha Rusk Goalkeeper of the Week.

Caldwell spearheaded UCO’s defensive efforts last week as the Bronchos opened league play with two road wins.  The rookie fullback from Rowlett, Texas led the way in back-to-back shutouts over Texas Woman’s and Texas A&M-Commerce.

Rusk also played a key role in those two wins as she went the distance between the posts in both wins.  The Bixby freshman had 13 saves for the weekend, making seven in a 3-0 triumph over TWU and six in a 1-0 victory over A&M-C.

The Bronchos, now 7-2-2 on the year and 2-0 in the league, continue their quest for a fifth consecutive LSC regular-season title Friday when they host Eastern New Mexico for a 4 p.m. game at Tom Thompson Field.
